Film Posts 27: The Martian – 18th October, 2015

martian posterI’d heard good things about this, and I’ve generally like Ridley Scott’s science fiction movies – I even enjoyed Prometheus. though several people have since pointed out that I’m wrong. And what a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours The Martian is.

Matt Damon is astronaut Mark Watney trapped alone on Mars, using his ingenuity and science training to stay alive long enough for a rescue mission to get to him. He’s almost relentlessly cheerful and determined in the face of adversity, and the film has some very funny moments.

There’s a feel of Apollo 13 about the film, with the NASA team on earth trying to solve the problems facing Watney on Mars, and figure out ways of rescuing him. It’s a good advert for the thrills of science, maths and engineering – look how exciting it can be to solve life-or-death problems!

Nice view

Nice sunset

The Martian landscape is beautifully photographed – apart from the lack of oxygen and water and the freezing temperatures, it looks quite a nice place. Lovely mountains.

We watched this In Cyprus last night, Howard. Really enjoyable couple of hours and beautifully shot as you say. Nice to see a space film that ended well for a change. Know what you mean about the Apollo 13 vibe, and it was very much pro NASA…. At the very end, when the camera tilted up towards the darkness of space, it felt like Scott was very much suggesting we ought to be going back out there again.

  3. It’s on our to be watched list when it comes to Netflix. 🙂 Mr. Quantum is totally into all things Astrophysics and LOVED Apollo 13. And I’m a fan of Matt Damon, so it sounds like a win/win situation for us.
